Ermöglicht wird Splashtop durch ein kleines, angepasstes Linux-Betriebssystem, das im BIOS-Chip integriert ist. Die Lösung wurde vom US-Unternehmen DeviceVM entwickelt. Wird der Rechner eingeschaltet, so hat der User die Wahl, entweder das normale Betriebssystem zu booten oder das BIOS-Linux zu starten. Letzteres ist innerhalb von wenigen Sekunden einsatzbereit
