VMware vSphere 4.1 – Setting the number of cores per CPU in a virtual machine

Donnerstag, Januar 27th, 2011

vmware_logo.jpg   VMware multicore virtual CPU support lets you control the number of cores per virtual CPU in a virtual machine. This capability lets operating systems with socket restrictions use more of the host CPU’s cores which increases overall performance

vmwarecorespersocket_01.jpg

You first have to determine how many cores you need. If you need 8 cores then assign 8 vCPUs to your machine. Then if you set cpuid.coresPerSocket to 4 – VMware will assume you mean 2 Quad core processors

VMware VMDirectPath I/O – to directly access physical PCI and PCIe devices connected to a host

Dienstag, Dezember 28th, 2010

vmware_logo.jpg   VMware VMDirectPath I/O allows a guest operating system on a virtual machine to directly access physical PCI and PCIe devices connected to a host. Each virtual machine can be connected to up to two PCI devices. PCI devices connected to a host can be marked as available for passthrough from the Hardware Advanced Settings in the Configuration tab for the host. This direct path or passthrough can improve performance for VMware vSphere systems that utilize highspeed I/O devices such as 10 Gigabit Ethernet

iometer_01.jpg

IOMeter is a great way of measuring your disk io performance with http://vmktree.org/iometer  a nice way to check if your system is performing optimally and to compare your results with others

The IOmeter Real Life – OpenPerformanceTest.icf (8GB) – use 8KB blocks and perform 65% read and 35% write actions for 2 minutes in a 40% sequential way and thus 60% random way

To use IOMeter on a linux server

# ./dynamo -i 192.168.1.7 -m 192.168.1.2

VMware vSphere 4.1 – Oracle Real Application Cluster Performance

Donnerstag, Dezember 23rd, 2010

vmware_logo.jpg   Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) is used to run critical databases with stringent performance requirements. A series of tests recently were run in the VMware performance lab to determine how an Oracle RAC database performs when running on vSphere 4.1

But Oracle has not certified any of its products on VMware virtualized environments. Oracle Support will assist customers running Oracle products on VMware in the following manner – Oracle will only provide support for issues that either are known to occur on the native OS or can be demonstrated not to be as a result of running on VMware
