VMware ESX 3.5 update5 – Added requirement to have first 12 characters of Virtual Volume unique

Mittwoch, Januar 6th, 2010

vmware_logo.jpgdatacore_logo.JPG   Starting with ESX 3.5 update5 VMware requires that the first 12 characters of a Virtual Volume’s name be unique this is the Virtual Volume’s ‘serial number’ as seen by the ESX host (ESX 2.x and 3.5 prior to update5 did not use this and relied entirely on the LUN and Target numbers for any disk devices it discovered). Virtual Volumes whose names are not unique will be misidentified as duplicates of themselves and could result in some or none of them being discovered. For the same reasons VMware’s Consolidated Backup Proxy also requires that the name of Virtual Volumes mapped to all ESX Hosts, be unique, however this software requires the first 8 characters not 12. Therefore for configurations with a mix of ESX and VCB you should make the first 8 characters unique to meet all requirements

DataCore SANmelody – Multi Path IO For RedHat Enterprise Linux

Montag, August 24th, 2009

datacore_logo.JPG   Linux block-device multipathing (MPIO) is provided by a new component called the Device-mapper. Linux multipathing provides IO failover and automatic fail back to DataCore LUNs. A multipathed device may be used as a raw disk, which may be partitioned in the conventional way or used by the new Logical Volume Manager

DataCore SANmelody – Reclaiming Unused Space on Networked Managed Virtual Volumes (NMV)

Samstag, Januar 17th, 2009

datacore_logo.JPG  It is possible to reclaim Network Managed Volume storage allocation units (SAUs) from DataCore virtual volumes mapped to Application Servers after files have been deleted. Basically, this process consists of filling any disk space that was previously used (allocated), but currently unused, with zeros, then running the DataCore Utility DcsNmvCleanup.exe. This command line utility will deallocate any storage allocation units (SAUs) filled with zeros so that the SAUs are returned to the NMV pool

Storage Virtualisierung – Funktionsweise von Alternate Pathing/Multipathing

Dienstag, Februar 26th, 2008
