Enterprise RAID 6 versus RAID 5 – mean time to data loss (MTDL)

Montag, August 8th, 2011

Mean Time to Data Loss – RAID 6 is a dual distributed parity mechanism that permits two disk drives to fail in an array and still be able to recover and rebuild data from the remaining disk drives. This is a huge advantage over RAID 5 – especially in the MTDL. While the probability of a second drive failure during a rebuild is still low, the probability of a bad sector is still relatively high and gets worse with increasing array sizes
